Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.

Please bear with me, I might tend to babble or rant depending on how you look at it.

So I'm sitting here trying to gather my thoughts about this book and this is hard one for me, normally when I read it's because I want to escape the reality of life for a few hours. Thirteen Reasons Why is a book that does the complete opposite of that, it throws the very real reality of teen suicide right in your face. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to read this, and I also knew no matter how compelling or well written the story was it wasn't going to leave me with a positive feeling, it was just too heavy of a subject matter for that.

The story is told in the dual narratives of both Hannah and Clay. While Hannah explains her reasons for my she decided to end her life through a series of 7 cassette tapes and 13 stories. When Clay listens to the tapes we get his reaction to the event along with his perspective of some of them. The story is really well written as you get an understanding of both characters feeling and emotional states as the story progresses. At the beginning I really wanted to know what Clay had done to Hannah to end up on her list of reasons, but the more I got into the story what I really wanted was Hannah to fight. I wanted the end to be different, a mistake and that Hannah wasn't really dead, that she didn't succeed in ending her own life. That's not what happens and it's made very clear when the book starts that Hannah is gone, that end would cheapen the story as it is not one that should have a happy ending even if it is what I want.
I read a lot of reviews where people don't think Hannah's reason were good enough ones to make her want to kill herself , and maybe if you look at them individually they're not, but when you look at them as a whole you can start to realize how each one of them damaged her mental state. While some people may think it was vindictive of her to send the tapes to the people on her list I don't think it was, it would have been more vindictive if she would have released the tapes publicly. I think she wanted to get the point across to the people on the tapes that no matter how insignificant you think your action are that they may deeply affect another person.

While the subject matter is a sensitive subject Asher doesn't glorify suicide in any way, and instead possibly makes the reader assess how they treat others. It's a story that will stick with you for some time after you finish it. It would be my hope that anyone suffering with suicidal thoughts would find someone, anyone to talk to about it as there is nothing in life so bad that you should want to end it.

Hope's Daughter - Melanie Cusick-Jones

Life should be simple for Cassie.

For the small population of Earth survivors who live on the Space Station Hope everything they do is planned and scheduled, down to the cyclical food menus, their roles in the station, even how many children they have.

Despite rigid controls directing her life, Cassie feels more out of synch than ever and worries she won’t find a place for herself within the station community. Perhaps that’s because she’s hearing things inside her head that can’t possibly be real. Or maybe it’s the regular elopements of her peers, heading off to a romantic future in the Married Quarter of the space station, whilst she’s never even been attracted to a boy – no matter how hard her best friend Ami pushes them at her. Then there are the odd questions her work placement partner Balik keeps raising. His questions are just as troubling for her as his distracting smiles and eyes that seem to see inside her.

As Cassie draws closer to Balik she finds that everything else in her life begins to shift. He tells her things that call into question the system they live within. She can't believe he is right, but at the same time she finds it hard to deny the sincerity of his ideas. Could there be a connection between Cassie’s problems and Balik’s questions? The truth will drag them both to a terrifying and deadly conclusion beyond anything they could have imagined.

I didn't really know what to expect going into this. I'm not usually a huge fan of the Sci Fi genre, but I am a big fan of the Dystopian genre and when done right sometimes the two genres meld together really well. Hope's Daughter was one of these times.

The pacing of the story was great, it didn't drag and it didn't rush events it had a nice gradual build that made the story that much more believable. I liked how Melanie built up the environment of the space station, you really get a sense of what life is like on the SS Hope, it was very easy to visualize and didn't have a generic feel to the background that you can find in a lot of other novels.

The plot was interesting and well thought out because while you learn early on that something might be off with the people of SS Hope you're never quite sure what exactly is going on as there is no predictable plot here and you are left discovering thing just as the character do. There is a lot of suspense that takes place throughout the story and it's paced out so well that it keeps you guessing and wanting to continue.

I loved the characters of Cassie and Balik. Cassie is easily relatable with her fear and concerns with how she fits in  to her new adult life on the space station. She is also intelligent and strong willed, not the damsel in distress type at all. Balik is quiet intelligent character that always wants to answer the questions of how and why everything around him work and he leads Cassie to start questioning some of the things on the space station that just don't add up.

I had some theories about what was going on, and few that were somewhat close to what the big reveal was but the end still caught me off guard and wasn't what I was expecting. The end also left enough questions for me to look forward to the sequel. This was one of those books where I really want to say more about it but if I do I would probably give something away, so just read it then you will know what I'm talking about.

My Unproductive Week

It just hasn't been my week, between a nasty cold making it's way through my house, a broken toe, and bashing my head against a wall (don't ask) I didn't really get any reading done this week. So this week I'm making a reading plan, kinda like my own personal read-a-thon. I hope to finish them all by Thursday.

The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

I did do one productive thing this week. I managed to limp my way to the book store to scope out the clearance shelves and was able to score six books for under thirty dollars, so that made me happy

Voluspa: A Magical World - Sam D.& Ray East Review and Guest Post

Amy, a forlorn fifteen year old girl from NYC, never thought that she would attend school on a magical mountain with wild animals as her classmates and that she would go to a prom on a flying carpet. Its love at first sight when Drake- a shape shifter rescues her from a pre-historic beast and befriends her. Little does she know that Drake’s father is the tyrannical leader who has always wanted Amy and her kind dead. In her struggle to challenge the supremacy in the magical world, she realizes her powers, confronts aspects about herself that she may not be comfortable with, makes lasting friends while excelling in her school - something which she had not been able to do in her human world. All hell breaks loose, as Drake goes missing and Voluspan mercenaries try to hunt Amy down. Amy and her friends use strategic warfare, pit adversaries among themselves and use every last drop of strength, skill and courage as they take on warriors far more ruthless and skilled than themselves. But Amy is in for a rude shock when she finally finds Drake.

Guest Post

Why write a book like ‘Voluspa – A Magical World’? Like countless other teenage girls, I had a difficult time during my pre-teen and early teen years. I had major body issues and even suffered with eating disorders. During these years, I often fantasized about escaping to an alternate universe where I could start life afresh or find acceptance. My imagination was further fuelled by the countless number of books I devoured growing up, especially since they were my only constant companions. Thus when the time came to put words down to paper, I found myself creating a fantasy world – a place so magical that it had the power to heal even the most troubled souls.

Talking about troubled souls, the main two protagonists of my story, Amy and Drake, definitely fit the bill. Amy has a hard childhood, feeling unwanted and unloved whereas Drake’s childhood is shadowed by impossibly high expectations imposed on him by his father. The two meet when Amy crosses over realms to land up in Voluspa and they connect from the very beginning. They find a kindred spirit in each other and like two halves of a whole, they complete each other. But their relationship is taboo as per the law in Voluspa. One of the questions that this book subtly puts forward is whether individual freedom is sacrosanct or should it take a backseat when it comes to greater good of the land and people. This story also puts a new spin on the age old battle between good and evil. Circumstances force both Amy and Drake to do certain things
which one could consider a touch shy of evil. But at no time does their love for each other diminish and whatever they do is born out of a need to protect or help the other.

One could say that this is a story of two star crossed lovers set against a magical backdrop of an enchanted land. However, the world of Voluspa in not a Utopic one; like most known civilizations it has its own problems. Despotic leaders, wars, arbitrate laws; all weave themselves to create a rich tapestry of life that forms the backdrop of this story. The story borrows from mythology to give it an authentic tone. It is multi layered and I believe would appeal to a broad spectrum of age.

At present I am working on the next book in the Voluspa series. This book finds a changed Drake. His ordeals with Lord Vali has changed him permanently and no matter how much he wishes, there is no going back for him. He is now faced with the challenge of carving out a new life for himself away from Voluspa, away from Amy. But Amy is not one to accept loosing Drake so easily; she is determined to save Drake no matter what the cost. Now that the secret of her birth is out, she also has to contend with the wrath of the council members. In the meantime Lord Vali continues with his quest to resurrect his demonic leader using Drake and the book.

To find out what happens to Amy and Drake and their forbidden love wait for the next book in

Voluspa – A Magical World.

Review

To be honest when I received the request from Ray East to review Voluspa I almost turned it down. I thought that it would be to much of a middle grade read to appeal to my taste. I'm glad I didn't because once I got into it I was hooked. It took me a little while to get into the story, more from outside influences than the story itself so I put it down for a couple of days before I picked it back up.

The story follow Amy a fifteen year old girl from New York City, she lives with her alcoholic step father that neglects her and is very much an outcast among her peers. When her step father dies she goes to live with her grandmother in Georgia that she has had very little contact with throughout her life. While going through her mother's childhood  room in an attempt to learn more about her mother who died when Amy was just a toddler she comes across a book called 'Legends of Voluspa', which she believes to be a work of fiction. After she starts reading the book she begins to have dreams that she is in the world of Voluspa. When she can't wake herself from her dream she soon realizes that Voluspa is a very real place and she has somehow transported herself there. Soon she meets Drake, a shape shifter, and find the friends and acceptance she has always longed for all while finding out more about herself and her family's connection to the magical world of Voluspa.

It's been awhile since I've read a straight fantasy book, so it was quite refreshing to read this. I loved the mythical creatures and magic that are in Voluspa and I want a pet Typhon. The authors do an amazing job of painting the picture of what the world of Voluspa is like it was very easy to get lost in the story.

I enjoyed watching the growth of Amy as a character throughout the story and how she goes from a shy outcast to a confident heroine. Drake was a great character, he is kind, loyal, confident, and a little bull-headed sometime but most guys are. Jacek is a bit of an enigma and I hope to find out more about him in the next. Amilio and Sonja are more of minor character but still serve their purpose and loyal friends and key members of their group.

The relationship between Amy and Drake is definitely interesting, there is a lot of chemistry there but not the instant love thing that I'm not a fan of more of an instant attraction and easy friendship. It was nice to watch how their relationship developed in the story.

Voluspa is a great fantasy read for anyone looking to escape into a magical world for a few hours and I can't wait for the sequel to be released.

Sixteen year old Julia Phillips buries herself in guilt after killing her best friend Monica in a car accident. Julia awoke in the hospital with a broken leg, a new talent for drawing and false memories of the accident, in which she dies and Monica lives. The doctors attribute this to her head injury, but no one can explain how a bracelet engraved with her name ended up at the scene of the accident. A bracelet no one has ever seen before.
Classmate Evan Whittaker paid Julia no attention before the accident, let alone after. Now suddenly he’s volunteering to tutor her and offering to drive her home. She can't ignore that his new obsession started after his two-day disappearance last week and that he wears a pendant she’s been drawing for months. When the police show up one night looking for Evan, he begs Julia to run with him, convincing her that Monica is still alive. Julia agrees to go, never guessing where he’s really from.

My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is three hundred and eighty-four years. Each new settlement asks for a new journal, and so this Book of Shadows begins…
In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate at the hands of the panicked mob: the Warlock Gideon Masters, and his Book of Shadows. Secluded at his cottage in the woods, Gideon instructs Bess in the Craft, awakening formidable powers she didn’t know she had and making her immortal. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.
In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life for herself, tending her garden and selling herbs and oils at the local farmers' market. But her solitude abruptly ends when a teenage girl called Tegan starts hanging around. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth begins teaching Tegan the ways of the Hedge Witch, in the process awakening memories--and demons—long thought forgotten.
